新年快乐

Happy lunar new year folks, wanted to share something I wrote for a friend's birthday also today:

Behold this dark night of Winter.
Battling to survive day by day
gaining ground, losing ground
Out of breath.

Behold this dark night,
the beginning of Dawn.
Lunar new year
brings new light!

Doing your best,
growing beyond bounds!
Your friends are here
when you need rest.

Behold this dark night,
a cosmic coin toss,
that brings good fortune
with every new flight.

Happy Chinese new year to everyone

And most importantly, I hope you get rich!

I am totally down with this hahaha. Hope we all get rich!
I was pretty badly indoctrinated by my time in China, as well as some hard learning experiences back in the US during those days. I think I said to a number of my younger students over the years, the best form of self defense in the known world is wealth. The best way to affect change and make a better world is not protest and activism, it is wealth, because money talks louder than anything, and if you have money you can afford to make the sacrifices and compromises to affect change.

People always say "be the change you want to see in the world" but the first step really is be able to afford to be the change you want to see, because when people don't have money they can only change as much food as they can live without.

Ok, maybe that was a useless series of self righteous statements. Go get rich, happy new year!

It's been over 25 years since I became interested in Chinese martial arts, and I've never gone down the road of fanciful Sinophilia like so many martial artists do, wanting to dress like a kung fu movie, date Asian women, and practice faux-Taoism. Now, finally, after all this time, I find a Chinese philosophy I can really get behind! Let's all get rich!

If you want to get rich you are basically Chinese by default.
