According to rumor and Chen Xin's book, it's for when someone catches your kick. From experience, I can say it's surprising when you catch someone's kick and they up and kick you with the other leg, but the lesson there is if you DO catch someone's kick, do something with it instead of just standing there like an idiot.

I like the donkey kick version, but I think all the old chuo jiao stuff is cool, so maybe that's just me...

Hmmm, interesting clarification.
So, quite a “niche” application I suppose.
Yes, if one catches a kick, not a bad goal to do something with it indeed.
