It's like a contest to see how many and what kind of differences. Seems so much more loud and obvious to me now than it used to.

Did Chen Zhenglei's line ever had more similarities to Chen Zhaokui's teachings at some point? I remember reading Chen Zhenglei learned from Chen Zhaokui, but something like "attended some workshops when he's in town" kind of arrangements.

Today, it looks like the major lines from the big 4 are all normalizing to a similar "village style". The details are being smoothed over into more simple big flowing movements. Maybe makes it easier for people to see and follow, so they get bigger class sizes and profit.

Oh, and I guess because the movements become more simple, the applications end up being more simple as well and use more brute strength.

This video was shot right around or just before the time of CZK's passing. The four of these guys had studied with him freshly at this point but that was after something like 11 years of long term training with Chen Zhaopi, which would be a pretty difficult set of habits to break after that amount of time. And yes, they learned with CZK is a kind of seminar format in visits, they were not local students.

For some background understanding of their exposure I think some of that is covered in this series:

I don't think strength and simplicity are indicators of flawed technique, in and of themselves. From my perspective, it's more that the context of "usage" has become so limited that mechanical flaws that will get your ass kicked in a more open environment are allowed to flourish and become the norm when the only real standard for skill is appeal to authority (with continued revenue being the highest authority of all).
